Creative Practice Blog #2
September 8th, 2024
Hello and welcome back to my blog! As stated in my first blog post, I am using the medium of photography to explore the theme of community. This week, I choose to focus on how Haile Farmers Market exemplifies this theme.
Every Saturday morning, friends, families, and even dogs gather at the Haile Farmers Market. It is truly more than just a marketplace; it is also a celebration of the community. Local farmers, artisans, and chefs fill the street with their handmade goods. Each product tells a story, whether it's through handmade crafts that reflect the artist's creativity or fresh fruits and vegetables grown with the dedication of local farmers. By wandering from stall to stall, you get to learn these stories and deepen your connection with fellow community members.
On Saturday, I had the joy of experiencing this. After wandering around for a while, I decided to try and get a photograph to highlight this celebration. Though, I found it hard to decide what to photograph. Should I highlight the group of people in line for a pastry, a community united by their love for baked goods? Or maybe I could photograph the pottery vendor, where a group of people were united by an interest in handmade goods and their connection strengthened through talking about the process of creating each mug? Or maybe I could just photograph the live musician; music is the perfect way of bringing together people of all types. In the end, I decided to take photos of it all. I'm only sharing the two below because they turned out the clearest. Nevertheless, I loved taking every photo and being able to appreciate the beauty of a community coming together and creating stronger connections.
*Additionally, I wanted to add a note about how using photography has affected by health. This week, I found it the process of taking photos at the market to be very therapeutic. I didn't care how my photos turned out, I just found joy and peace in knowing I was able to capture the beauty of what I was seeing.
