Creative Practice Blog #9

 October 27, 2024

Hello and welcome back! For this week’s artistic medium, I decided to switch it up again. Another medium I love, but have yet to practice for my blog, is poetry. So, I chose to write a poem about friendship. This decision was inspired by my previous post, where I reflected on the importance of my community of friends.

While many English teachers may disagree, I think the beauty of poetry is that there is no singular, “perfect” interpretation. There is the message the author was trying to convey, but then there is also the message that the readers interpret based on their own experiences and perspectives. That personal connection is what makes poetry so special. With this in mind, I aimed to make my poem about friendship broad and relatable, so it could resonate with a variety of readers. Friendship, much like poetry, is deeply personal yet rooted in universal themes. It varies from person to person, but certain ideas like trust, support, and shared understanding are the basis of most friendships. Which are the elements I tried to capture in my poem, allowing readers to find pieces of their own relationships within my words.

When I sat down to write this poem, I was feeling stressed and overwhelmed by the abundance of homework and studying I had to complete. Despite feeling like I should be working on these assignments, I decided to dedicate my time to writing the poem. Which I am so glad I did! I became so absorbed by the process of writing the poem that I forgot all the stress that had previously consumed me. By the time I finished I felt calmer and refreshed. So I definitely plan to write another poem, or partake in some artistic practice, in the future when I get overwhelmed again.

One for all and all for one,

Their laughter warms me like the sun.

Like my shadow on summer days,

I know they’re beside me always.

Through every secret that's been declared,

And all the laughter that’s been shared.

Through every disagreement we've faced,

And all the differences we’ve embraced

In moments of joy or when spirits are low,

They lift me up, they help me grow.

When everything is said and done,

It's one for all and all for one.
